Route number one, the undisputed leader among the guests of Victoria is a journey along the Great Ocean Road. The road starts about 100 km Southwest of Melbourne near the small town of Torquay. Nearly 65% of the road passes along the ocean’s coast with absolutely astounding views, which are the primary interest for this route. The route’s total length is about 240 km, from Torquay to Warrnambool. The second route by popularity is a trip to the Penguin Parade on Phillip Island.
By the way, not Philipp, but specifically Phillip island, as the island was named in honour of the first governor of the New South Wales colony, Arthur Phillip. It is a surname, not a first name.
The island is located 140 km Southeast of Melbourne, the drive to it takes approximately two hours. The island is small, about 125 square km, connected to the mainland via a bridge which is easily accessible.
The island is chock full of curious tourist attractions, which you can easily spend a whole day visiting. Among them are Panny’s Chocolate Factory, ‘A Maze N Things’ museum of illusions, the Koala Conservation Center, the Churchill Island Heritage Farm and much, much more. But of course, the most popular destination on the island, one of Australia’s biggest attractions is the Penguin Parade. Penguins have inhabited this island for thousands and thousands of years.
The first commercial viewing of this spectacle, which was very fittingly called the Parade, took place in distant 1922, so it is more than 100 years old.
It is important to note, that the penguins appear on the beach only after sunset. On one hand, this is convenient, as you can know exactly when you need to be at the stands to observe this event, but on the other hand, there is no power in the world that can convince the penguins to emerge before the sun goes down. So, don’t be especially hasty, if you wish to see the parade at any other time of day, you should relax and accept the fact, the penguins won’t come out before sunset. Full stop, end of story.
So if you want to see only the parade, without visiting other places on the island, you need to arrive about an hour before sunset. How long you choose to observe these small, flightless birds as they waddle to their burrows is up to you, but usually not longer than an hour, a maximum of one and a half. Then we will return to Melbourne, which will take about two hours.

## The Challenge of Exploring Both in a Single Day: Distance, Time, and Attractions
We at Bilby Tours constantly hear the same question, which prompted us to write this text, “How can I see the Great Ocean Road and the Penguin Parade in one day?”
Well, unfortunately, I have to disappoint you, that in reality making this trip in one day is **practically impossible**.
The first and most notable reason – the distance. The 12 Apostles, which without a doubt are the primary destination along the Great Ocean Road are about 250 km from Melbourne, and the Penguin Parade is 140 km from Melbourne, in opposite directions.
In other words, to reach both destinations in the same day you would need to drive at least 650 km to Phillip Island, then after the Penguin Parade return to Melbourne, adding another 140 km – that is 850 km in one day.
This is possible, but only if you just drive and drive without stopping for observation points, snacks, lunch and toilet breaks. We are after all talking about real people, which are on holiday and breaking the record for maximum distance travelled across Australia in one day typically isn’t part of their plan.
## The Verdict
So, our answer to the question **“Can I see the Great Ocean Road and the Penguin Parade in one day?” – is No, you can’t.**
## Our Advice
So first you make a trip along the Great Ocean Road, and then, the following day you will go to the Penguin Parade.
One more piece of advice, in that particular order, first the Road, then the Parade, and not the other way around.
If you head to the Island first, then you will arrive in Melbourne late in the evening, during the summer this is basically midnight, and then the next day you will need to get up at about 7 in the morning to head out at 9 for the 12 Apostles.
It is easier to return from the Great Ocean Road at 9 in the evening, have a rest and the next day go to see the Penguins.

Vegemite is the traditional Australian spread. Starting from kindergarten Australian children regularly eat sandwiches with this very healthy product.
It was created in Melbourne by the chemist Cyril Callister, when he was working for the “Fred Walker Cheese” company. High quantities of group B vitamins in the yeast-based spread were meant to be quite beneficial to children.
Following a competition for the best name of the product, a prize of 50 pounds was awarded to the author of the name “Vegemite”. From here commenced its long journey to popularity. The brown spread, though in attractive packaging, wasn’t taken a fancy to straight away. The company tried to rename it to Parwill, hoping that the product will surpass in popularity its contender, Marmite. More than twenty years were required for people to get used to it, and only after World War II did Australian consumers notice it. The company’s commercials aided in this and the “We Are Happy Little Vegemites” jingle became extremely popular. After this, as so often happens, the American food industry giant Kraft became interested in the Australian product, which they produce to this day.
Vegemite is not liked by everyone, as it has a specific taste – it is quite salty, slightly bitter and isn’t consumed by itself, but is a good addition to a meat, fish or vegetable sandwich.
It can be said that, in order to sincerely enjoy the taste of Vegemite, one must be born an Australian and eat it from their early childhood. The giant purse lies in the Melbourne downtown, not far from Coffs Harbour stands The Big Banana and The Big Milkshake Container in Tongala, Victoria There are also the The Big Gold Panner, The Giant Worm in Bass, Victoria, as well as The Big Cigar in the town of Churchill, named after Winston Churchill.
Then there are also The Big Wine Cask, The Big Mosquito in Hexham, The Big Cow in Nambour and, of course, the national legend depicted in The Big Ned Kelly.

The flag is, by right, considered to be one of the country’s main symbols. Australia, being a relatively young country, gained its national symbol in 1901, following the formation of the Australian Federation on January the 1st of that year.
On the 1st of January the unification of Australian colonies came into effect, but the country had no official flag. A competition for the best flag design took place. The judges had 32823 applications to choose from, with the help of seven criteria:
- Heraldry
- History
- Federal structure
- Originality
- Loyalty to the British Empire
- Cost of manufacture
- Practicality
Many portrayed a theme of Australian wildlife on their models. The participants were very creative. For example, one model depicted a kangaroo jumping over the Southern Cross.
In the end, the prize of 1000 pounds was divided amongst five participants, whose applications were all very similar, the differences between them being only marginal. The chosen one had a blue background, and in its top left-hand corner was located the British flag, also known as the Union Jack. Underneath it was the commonwealth star, and the right half of the flag was dominated by five white stars symbolising the Southern Cross.
This model was discussed in the Parliament of Australia. It was only in 1903 that the first Prime Minister of Australia, Edmund Barton, sent the king of Great Britain and Ireland, Edward VII, an image of the flag for confirmation. The king approved, and on the 2nd of June 1904 the parliament passed a resolution for the use of this flag in all purposes, excluding the use of a similar one with a red background to fly on merchant ships. In the future this caused confusion, and for this reason, on the 14th of February 1954, the Queen of the United Kingdom, Elizabeth II approved of the blue version as Australia’s national flag.

## 1. Definition of a Private Tour
A Private Tour is a travel service offered exclusively to an individual customer or a self-selected group, such as family, friends, or colleagues. It is not shared with members of the general public. These tours are customisable in terms of itinerary, duration, inclusions, and departure time (within operational limits), and are conducted in a private vehicle with a dedicated tour guide. Pricing is based on the number of participants and tour type, and may include personalised services or upgrades as specified at the time of booking.
## 2. Booking and Payment
To secure a Private Tour with Bilby Tours, a deposit is required. The amount of the deposit and the payment due date will be clearly stated in your booking confirmation, which may be sent via email or other communication platforms, including WhatsApp, SMS, WeChat, Viber, Telegram, or similar.
Your booking will only be confirmed once Bilby Tours has received the nominated deposit. Failure to make the deposit payment by the specified date may result in cancellation of the tentative reservation without further notice.
Full payment terms, including balance due dates and accepted payment methods, will be provided in the confirmation correspondence.
## 3. Cancellations and Amendments
Bilby Tours reserves the right to charge cancellation fees depending on the notice period provided. Amendments to existing bookings are subject to availability and may incur administrative charges.
- **Cancellations made within 48 hours** of the scheduled tour start time, or failure to board the tour, will incur a 100% cancellation fee. The full ticket fare will be forfeited and is non-refundable.
- **Cancellations made more than 48 hours before** departure are eligible for the following options:
- A full refund of the amount paid at the time of booking; or
- Flexible date changes with unlimited complimentary rescheduling; or
- A credit voucher equal to the amount paid, which can be used for travel on an alternative date.
## 4. Minimum Group Size
Bilby Tours does not impose a minimum group size for Private Tours. Private tours can be arranged for individuals or groups of any size.
The maximum number of participants is generally limited to 24 people, although this may vary depending on the specific tour and logistical considerations. Final confirmation of the maximum group size will be provided upon request and may be subject to vehicle availability, accommodation capacity, or other operational factors.
## 5. Alcohol and Drug Policy
The consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited on board all our vehicles. We reserve the right to deny boarding or re-entry to any passenger who is visibly intoxicated or poses a risk to the safety and comfort of other passengers, the driver, or the vehicle. Additionally, we reserve the right, at our discretion, to prohibit the possession or consumption of alcohol at any time before departure or during the tour.
## 6. Luggage Policy
Luggage is permitted on all Private Tours with Bilby Tours. A suitable vehicle will be arranged based on the number of participants and the amount of luggage specified at the time of booking.
To ensure comfort and safety, please provide your luggage details in advance. The type and quantity of luggage allowed will be confirmed during the booking correspondence and included in your tour confirmation.
Failure to provide accurate luggage information may affect vehicle allocation and overall tour logistics.
## 7. Child Policy
Children of all ages are welcome on Bilby Tours’s Private Tours. For the safety of young passengers, appropriate child restraints, such as child seats or booster seats, will be provided.
Guests are required to inform Bilby Tours of the age and number of children at the time of booking to ensure suitable seating arrangements are prepared in advance.
## 8. Pick-Up and Drop-Off Services
Bilby Tours provides complimentary pick-up and drop-off services within the Melbourne Metropolitan area for all Private Tours.
Pick-up and drop-off locations will be arranged during the booking process and confirmed in your booking correspondence. If your location falls outside the standard service area, additional charges or alternative arrangements may apply and will be discussed in advance.
## 9. Tour Inclusions and Exclusions
The services included in the tour price will be clearly outlined at the time of booking. This typically includes transportation, accommodation, and entry to listed attractions. Exclusions such as meals, travel insurance, personal expenses, and optional activities will be specified.
## 10. Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for all participants. Insurance should cover medical expenses, personal liability, loss or damage to personal belongings, and tour cancellation or interruption.
## 11. Responsibilities of Participants
Participants are expected to behave respectfully and follow the tour guide’s instructions, as well as any relevant local laws and regulations. Bilby Tours reserves the right to remove any participant whose behaviour is deemed disruptive or poses a risk to others without entitlement to a refund.
## 12. Itinerary Changes
Bilby Tours reserves the right to alter tour itineraries due to unforeseen circumstances, including but not limited to weather conditions, road closures, safety concerns, or supplier availability. Every effort will be made to provide a similar alternative where possible.
## 13. Force Majeure
Bilby Tours is not liable for any failure to perform its obligations due to circumstances beyond its reasonable control, including but not limited to natural disasters, strikes, government actions, pandemics, or other force majeure events.
## 14. Limitation of Liability
Bilby Tours’s liability is limited to the extent permitted by law. The company is not liable for loss, injury, damage, delay, or inconvenience caused by third-party services or events outside its control.

A Group Tour refers to a shared travel experience in which participants book individual seats on a vehicle commonly known as a “Seat-in-Coach” (SIC) arrangement. Passengers on a group tour should expect to travel with other participants who have independently booked the same tour. These tours operate on fixed itineraries and schedules, and are designed to provide a cost-effective way to explore destinations with like-minded travellers.
## 2. Booking and Payment
A full payment is required at the time of booking to secure participation. The specific payment terms, including deadlines and accepted methods, will be provided upon confirmation of the group tour.
## 3. Cancellations and Amendments
Bilby Tours reserves the right to charge cancellation fees depending on the notice period provided. Amendments to existing bookings are subject to availability and may incur administrative charges.

Large or inappropriate items such as surfboards, bicycles, or excessive luggage may be refused at the time of departure unless prior arrangements have been made.
Please note that mobility aids, such as scooters, wheelchairs, pushchairs, prams, and walking frames, cannot be safely stored on our vehicles. If you require the use of any such aids, please contact us before making a booking to discuss available options.

Children under 4 years of age are not permitted on our group tours.

Bilby Tours provide complimentary inner-city pick-up and drop-off services at selected accommodation locations. It is the customer’s responsibility to be ready and waiting outside their nominated pick-up point at least 10 minutes before the scheduled departure time.
Failure to be present and visible at the designated pick-up location may result in the driver being unable to locate you, which could lead to a missed departure. Bilby Tours accepts no responsibility for passengers who fail to board due to late arrival or being unlocatable at the nominated meeting point.
